Share “Our results represent the strongest evidence to date of a clinical benefit from psilocybin therapy, with the potential to transform care for patients with cancer-related psychological distress,” says study lead investigator Stephen Ross, MD, director of substance abuse services in the Department of Psychiatry at NYU Langone.“If larger clinical trials prove successful, then we could ultimately have available a safe, effective, and inexpensive medication — dispensed under strict control — to alleviate the distress that increases suicide rates among cancer patients,” says Ross, also an associate professor of psychiatry at NYU School of Medicine.Study co-investigator Jeffrey Guss, MD, a clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at NYU Langone, notes that psilocybin has been studied for decades and has an established safety profile. Study participants, he says, experienced no serious negative effects, such as hospitalization or more serious mental health conditions.Although the neurological benefits of psilocybin are not completely understood, it has been proven to activate parts of the brain also impacted by the signaling chemical serotonin, which is known to control mood and anxiety. Serotonin imbalances have also been linked to depression. For the study, half of the participants were randomly assigned to receive a 0.3 milligrams per kilogram dose of psilocybin while the rest received a vitamin placebo (250 milligrams of niacin) known to produce a “rush” that mimics a hallucinogenic drug experience.Approximately half way through the study’s monitoring period (after seven weeks), all participants switched treatments. Those who initially received psilocybin took a single dose of placebo, and those who first took niacin, then received psilocybin. Neither patients nor researchers knew who had first received psilocybin or placebo. Guss says, “The randomization, placebo control, and double-blind procedures maximized the validity of the study results.”One of the key findings was that improvements in clinical evaluation scores for anxiety and depression lasted for the remainder of the study’s extended monitoring period — specifically, eight months for those who took psilocybin first. All patients in the study — mostly women age 22 to 75 who are or were patients at the Perlmutter Cancer Center of NYU Langone — had either advanced breast, gastrointestinal, or blood cancers and had been diagnosed as suffering from serious psychological distress related to their disease. All patients, who volunteered to be part of the study, were provided with tailored counseling from a psychiatrist, psychologist, nurse or social worker, and were monitored for side effects and improvements in their mental state.Co-investigator Anthony Bossis, PhD, a clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at NYU Langone, says patients also reported post-psilocybin improvements in their quality of life: going out more, greater energy, getting along better with family members, and doing well at work. Several also reported variations of spirituality, unusual peacefulness, and increased feelings of altruism.“Our study showed that psilocybin facilitated experiences that drove reductions in psychological distress,” says Bossis. “And if it’s true for cancer care, then it could apply to other stressful medical conditions.”Bossis cautions that patients should not consume psilocybin on their own or without supervision by a physician and a trained counselor. He also says “Psilocybin therapy may not work for everyone, and some groups, such as people with schizophrenia, as well as adolescents, should not be treated with it.” Email Share on Facebook Pinterest LinkedIn When combined with psychological counseling, a single dose of a mind-altering compound contained in psychedelic mushrooms significantly lessens mental anguish in distressed cancer patients for months at a time, according to results of a clinical trial led by researchers at NYU Langone Medical Center.Published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology online Dec.1, the study showed that one-time treatment with the hallucinogenic drug psilocybin — whose use required federal waivers because it is a banned substance — quickly brought relief from distress that then lasted for more than six months in 80 percent of the 29 study subjects monitored, based on clinical evaluation scores for anxiety and depression. The NYU Langone-led study was published side by side with a similar study from Johns Hopkins. Study results were also endorsed in 11 accompanying editorials from leading experts in psychiatry, addiction, and palliative care. Share on Twitter
After the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 swept the boat, which belongs to the marine systems department of Takata High School in Rikuzentakata, Iwate, into the ocean, the vessel drifted across the Pacific Ocean and eventually beached on the shore of Crescent City, California. In April of this year the boat was discovered on the beach and students at nearby Del Norte High School made efforts to return the vessel to the school in Japan. On hearing the news, NYK Group offered to assist in transporting the vessel back to Rikuzentakata, where the company has participated in voluntary relief activities since the 2011 disaster.NYK shipped the boat on its containership, Spring R, from the port of Oakland, California to Sendai port in Japan, where Yusen Logistics handled Customs clearance operations and land transport for the project.Takata High School students, who are currently attending classes in temporary buildings in Ofunato city, Iwate, watched as the boat returned to its home and was taken to the Rikuzentakata Municipial Museum, where it will be used for disaster prevention education. www.nyk.com
Addressing Jamaicans at the Jamaica-USA Chamber of Commerce luncheon last week Jamaican Minister Daryl Vaz appeals to the Jamaican Diaspora to invest in Jamaica’s economic development.Garth A. RoseLast Friday, Oct 6, Minister Without Portfolio, in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, Daryl Vaz, was Keynote Speaker at the luncheon of the 13th Conference of the Jamaica USA Chamber of Commerce (JAUSACC).Minister Vaz was subbing for Jamaica’s Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Karl Samuda, who was unable to attend. The minister told his audience, consisting mostly of South Florida and Caribbean business men and women that, “Jamaica is always seeking and ready to welcome investors to our shores. As a result, we are looking at ways in which we can improve and make it easier to do business in Jamaica.”He offered some of the plans being implemented by the Jamaican government to target these investors, and engage the Jamaican Diaspora. The plans include the role of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries (MICAF), a merger of former ministries to move the industrial sector “further along the value chain and to foster agro-industrial growth.”The Agricultural sectorVaz explained that while the agriculture sector has emerged as a major player in the vision of a better and more prosperous Jamaica, significant investment is needed. “Unearthing the vast potential of the land and to maximize the wealth creation possibilities will require an investment of more than just finances. We also need expertise. The Jamaican Diaspora can make a huge difference in this regard,” he said. “If even 10 percent of the share of the over US$2 billion in remittances sent home annually were invested in small businesses and agriculture, this would make a significant difference in enhancing some of the growth targets of the sector.”Expansion and redevelopment of the agricultural sector includes focus on production of Irish potato and onions. Sweet Potatoes, yams and peppers are also identified for special attention as part of an export thrust. Other crops include strawberry and mushroom production, to satisfy the needs of the Jamaican hotel sector.Vaz also indicated steps are being taken to modernize the agricultural sector, including improving land irrigation nationally. He said the Jamaican private sector was involved in the agricultural modernization project. “There are a number of big players in the sector investing heavily in agro-business and partnering with farmers and guaranteeing sure markets for their produce and livestock.”The Diaspora’s assistance is being sought to fund the agricultural sector, “While we continue to press for funding at low interest rates for our farmers, the Diaspora can help by mobilizing its own resources to be made available to farmers and enterprises in Jamaica.”General investmentsThe minister said while specific investment is needed to modernize the agricultural sector, Jamaica is ripe for investment generally, He said, “Our vision of real growth for the country, led to the creation of the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation (MEGJC) that I am proud to serve as Minister without Portfolio.”The ministry has identified strategic investment priorities that will set the country on the path to growth with jobs. These priorities include:The Logistics Hub initiatives; agro-parks; business process outsourcing; tourism diversification, including eco and medical tourism; creative industries; energy diversification and international financial services.Investment priorities include: agro-processing (food and beverages), aquaculture, coffee, education, entertainment, information communication technology (ICT), Fashion, materials and miningVaz said, “The Ministry has met with all the major investors and has removed obstacles to investments that were in the pipeline, in addition to facilitating new investments.”Modernizing the labor forceHe also said as Jamaica attracts investments to build the required infrastructure, the country is seeking to equip the labor force with the skills in demand by investors. To this end, the MEGJC has formed strategic partnerships with the Jamaica Manufacturers Association (JMA) and the Business Process Outsourcing Association to establish Sector Skills Councils (SSC). This is a recommendation from the Labor Market Forum held in February 2017, with the support of the IDB.This initiative is expected to address skills gaps currently being experienced by employers and will lead to greater employment and productivity.Jamaica’s open for business Making a special appeal to the Jamaican Diaspora, Vaz said, “You understand the local economy and culture, and are willing to take on greater risks in business and investment opportunities that others may choose to pass on. If this is your inclination, I urge you to forge relationships with like-minded individuals in this Chamber who want to accelerate the development process in Jamaica. Jamaica’s doors are open for business.”

Smith, LeBron James, Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson. It is the fourth different starting lineup this season.Lue also said that Rose will likely return from a sprained ankle on Saturday against New Orleans. In this lineup, the only real change from last season is Rose replacing Kyrie Irving. Love finds himself back at his power forward position, and Crowder will be coming off the bench. There’s no doubt that the move will be better for Love in the long term at his natural position, as he will now have the benefit of not getting worn down contending with opposing centers.“I think it’s better, too, because having Kevin bang with those big guys, it’s wearing him out for his shot and having to [guard] all the pick-and-rolls, it’s a lot of energy to ask of Kevin, especially when he has to be one of our primary scorers,” Lue said. “So getting Tristan back in that lineup, the bigs, he’s used to setting screens, rolling, creating space for other guys. It’s what we’re going to go with right now.“Just another class act by Jae, he was great. Said nah, do whatever you want. You don’t have to explain anything to me. I just want to win. That’s the most important thing.’”Lue said Dwyane Wade moving to the bench Smith starting made it easier to add Thompson back into the first unit. In turn, Thompson moving to the first unit likely opens up a spot for Channing Frye in the second unit depending on the flow of the game, according to Lue.Crowder, regarded as a top defender on the team, was inserted into the starting lineup at the beginning of the season with the understanding that he would start of guarding the opposing team’s best player. After practice, Crowder told reporters that he is okay with the move.“To be honest with you I came in not putting myself as a starter, prepping myself to do whatever the team asked me to do, whether it be coming off the bench or whether it be starting,” Crowder said. “So, I’ve been open to a lot, to change because we haven’t found our groove yet. We’re still searching for answers to see how we can get games rolling in our favor. So I’m open to whatever the team wants me to do because at the end of the day we’re trying to reach a goal.”“I feel like a lot of guys are just trying to find a rhythm, myself included.”We will likely get the first glimpse at this new lineup on Saturday. Whether it will help the team come out to a faster start remains to be seen, but be prepared for more lineup experimentation at these early stages of the season. ALEXIS SANCHEZ’S time at Manchester United so far has hardly been a success, but in one game, everything can change.Especially when it’s a huge match; one that is the most important of the campaign.Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final with Tottenham is exactly that – the last chance for Jose Mourinho to bring home a trophy this season.7 Frontrunner Alexis Sanchez has been in erratic form since joining Manchester United but his effort and commitment can never be doubtedCredit: Getty – ContributorBig games call for big players, and while Mourinho threatened to drop under-performing stars this past week, one man he can’t afford to turn his back on is Sanchez. The Chilean’s commitment and work ethic can’t be called into question. And while other stars are appearing lazy and disinterested, Sanchez has shown a desire to turn things around. Our friends at Football Whispers explain why the Premier League’s best-paid player, earning £505,000 a week, must start Saturday’s FA Cup semi against Spurs.7 Alexis Sanchez is still a better bet than Marcus Rashford or Antony MartialCredit: REUTERS7 Manager Jose Mourinho should keep faith with Alexis Sanchez to help the Chilean superstasr gel into the Manchester United systemCredit: REUTERSSanchez’s move from Arsenal has been a misfire so far.Primarily because United have been unable to find a suitable position for Sanchez in which he can excel.TAKING THE RIC Manchester United leading Bayern Munich and Juventus in £40m pursuit of Watford ace RicharlisonThe Chilean has cut a frustrated figure at times, and evidently isn’t enjoying his football. But Mourinho was aware of the problems bringing him in during January would present. He said: “I am not a big fan of buying players in the winter market because of the period of adaptation especially with attackers.“But, he’s obviously improving and getting more comfortable with the team.”Regardless, Sanchez has plugged away in an effort to make the move work. This has to be admired.A player that came in on big money, could simply rest on that. Sanchez however, with his attitude, refuses to let it slide.Mourinho must continue to show faith in Sanchez, and other big stars for that matter. It’s an easy option to sacrifice those high-profile names in an effort to make an example of them, or simply to send out a message.Backing them, however, can reap great rewards.Jose Mourinho is full of praise for Paul Pogba after Manchester United won 2-0 against Bournemouth Zinedine Zidane this season has been under significant pressure to axe big stars. They don’t come much bigger than Cristiano Ronaldo but, in the first half the season, the Portuguese superstar was toiling.Instead he persisted with them and is now in a strong position to retain Real Madrid’s Champions League title, with an in-form Ronaldo at the forefront.Even when the Portuguese struggled in front of goal, his manager backed him.7 January signing Alexis Sanchez is still trying to win over Old Trafford fans but gives Manchester United a different type of creativityCredit: REUTERSMourinho must do the same with Sanchez. There are calls for the Chilean to be dropped and make away for Anthony Martial or Marcus Rashford, but neither of them are in good form.Martial is a fans favourite, so the calls for him to star are understandable.Rashford, meanwhile, is a local lad and has shone on occasions this season – most notably in the win at Liverpool recently.7 Fans’ favourite Anthony Martial and England starlet Marcus Rashford are alternatives to Alexis Sanchez up front for Manchester United against SpursCredit: Getty Images – GettySanchez’s arrival has put both in danger. You can’t rule out Sanchez starting with one of them either. The company doesn’t want anything but iTunes to control an iPod – and for good reason, too. The iTunes Store is a money-making machine with over 65 million active customers helping the company sell billions of songs, videos, and apps. Despite iTunes’ popularity, however, there are still those out there who would rather run their own software. Reverse-Engineering iTunesIn order to make an iPod work with an alternative software program – like gtkpod, Winamp, and Songbird, for example – developers need to understand a file called iTunesDB. To prevent people from writing to this file, Apple protects it with a checksum hash which has to be reverse-engineered. Usually that process only takes a couple of days. With the latest iTunes update, Apple has once again changed the hash, meaning it needs to be reverse-engineered again. The developers doing so collaborate together and share their thoughts on iPodhash, an open-source project hosted on Bluwiki, a free web site that lets users create wiki pages. Now Apple has asked for that site to come down, a request that the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) says is out of line. Earlier this month, a lawyer from Apple’s legal firm O’Melveny & Myers sent out a takedown notice to the site stating the content was illegal under the terms of the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). According to the cease-and-desist email, the site is “disseminating information designed to circumvent Apple’s FairPlay digital rights management system.” It continued, “FairPlay is considered anti-circumvention technology under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The DMCA explicitly prohibits the dissemination of information that can be used to circumvent such technology.”The EFF has jumped on this case, saying that Apple “doesn’t have a DMCA leg to stand on.” According to EFF senior staff attorney Fred von Lohmann, this move is effectively bending the law in order to stifle free speech. “Apple is essentially saying here that people can’t even talk about the mechanisms that Apple uses to lock in its music to the iTunes software,” he said. The EFF web site goes into more details as to why the EFF believes Apple to be in the wrong, listing the numerous reasons why there’s no DMCA violation on the site. Where Does This Leave The Linux Community? Since the Bluwiki site has complied with the takedown notice, the question is where does this leave the Linux community now? The main reason for the iPodhash project’s existence is due to the fact that Apple does not provide a version of iTunes that runs on Linux. The project is an important community effort that helps Linux users create software programs that work with their iPods and iPhones.Bluwiki’s founder, Sam Odio, had said he was unsure if putting the site back online would be possible. Says Odio of his compliance with the takedown notice, “I regret having to do this. I may be able to put the site back online, but quite honestly it’s unlikely because I can’t afford a legal battle with Apple.” Luckily for him, the EFF is now involved, so he will not have to worry with the legal fees.Apple may only be protecting their very profitable iTunes business, but in this case, they’re suggesting that the DMCA covers people merely talking about technical protection measures. If that’s so, then as EFF says, “they’ve got a serious First Amendment problem.” You can follow this case’s progress on the EFF’s web site, Odio’s blog, and on the iPodhash project’s homepage. 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market
