Labour Market Information System App to be Launched

first_imgThe Ministry of Labour and Social Security will be launching a Labour Market Information System (LMIS) app by the end of 2018.Portfolio Minister, Hon. Shahine Robinson, made the announcement during her 2018/19 Sectoral Debate presentation in the House of Representatives on June 26.This app will allow employers and jobseekers to register their vacancies and résumés, respectively.Regarding the Ministry’s 2017 National Labour Market Survey, Mrs Robinson said the undertaking demonstrates the Government’s efforts to provide evidence-based research from the industry level about the quantity and quality of human capital in the labour force.“It is also intended to provide training and educational institutions with data to inform their programmes and curricula. Our task at the Ministry is to work closely with the training institutions to provide a better match between the skills demanded by the workplace and the supply of graduates with these skills,” she explained.Other developments highlighted in the survey include an increase in the number of persons with disabilities who are now being employed by organisations across Jamaica.Data revealed that about 10 per cent of firms surveyed employ persons with disabilities.“The Ministry is playing its part in preparing persons with disabilities for the labour market. During the 2017/18 Financial Year, 76 students with disabilities were enrolled in various programmes offered by the Abilities Foundation. Seventy-nine graduates were placed in six-week paid work apprenticeship and six-month work solutions,” Mrs. Robinson informed. This, she said, was facilitated through the Inter-American Development Bank-funded Social and Economic Inclusion for Persons with Disabilities Project as well as assistance received through the HEART Trust/NTA and private sector.last_img
