Warner Bros. has just released the first trailer for the upcoming film adaptation of DC Comics’ Green Lantern, starring Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard and Mark Strong…. and it looks surprisingly good indeed. The film seems to stick pretty closely to Green Lantern Hal Jordan’s official origin story: having been guided to a crashed alien space craft by a floating power ring, ace fighter pilot Hal Jordan is made a member of the intergalactic peace-keeping force, the Green Lanterns. As a representative of Earth, Hal Jordan is told to use his power ring to keep peace in his sector.I’m a Green Lantern fan, so I was particularly interested in how the film handles the Corps themselves… probably the coolest aspect of the Green Lantern mythos. The Corps is made up of thousands of different aliens: unique to comics, each of these Lanterns has the same powers and abilities, and in the comics they often team up to combat massive galactic threats. The Corps seems to have been handled very faithfully in the trailer — there’s a fantastic blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance by Hal Jordan’s monstrous Corps. drill sargeant, Kilowog — and the special effects look excellent. My only reservation is Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan. He’s a likable actor, and he’s a Green Lantern fan to boot, but he’s wrong for the role: Jordan is a stoic and responsible character, while Ryan Reynolds comes across all too often as a cute but goofy puppy.Even so, this trailer has definitely restored some of my faith: Green Lantern looks like it just might be to 2011 what Iron Man was to 2008.
