NAACP conference planned for Oct 1921

first_imgVancouver — Myrlie Evers-Williams will be keynote speaker when the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People holds its autumn Washington/Oregon/Alaska-area convention in Vancouver on Oct. 19-21.Evers-Williams is the widow of Medgar Evers, a Mississippi civil rights activist and military veteran who was murdered in his driveway in 1963 by white supremacist Byron De La Beckwith.Evers-Williams, an author and former NAACP chairwoman, was portrayed by Whoopi Goldberg in the movie “Ghosts of Mississippi.” She will speak during the convention’s semiformal Saturday dinner. Also offered during the convention are workshops and discussions on public education, health care, public safety and criminal justice, voting rights and economic sustainability.Friday night will be a meet-and-greet with entertainment and dancing. Sunday morning will include a worship service.The entire community is invited to the conference, from Friday evening, Oct. 19, through Sunday, Oct. 21 at the Hilton Vancouver Washington, 301 W. 6th Street.Ticket prices vary depending on the session. Adult registration without meals is $60; with meals is $175; admission to the Evers-Williams keynote address and Saturday banquet are $75. Details are at; the local liaison is the Rev.
